Anki Flashcards is an open source flashcard program from Ankitects that schedules each card for review at the moment the learner is most likely to forget it. A card can hold text, audio, images and scientific markup, decks of more than one hundred thousand cards are handled without difficulty, and the AnkiWeb service keeps one collection in step across a computer, a browser and a phone. Add-ons extend the program further.
Limits of the Free Tier Plan: The computer program for Windows, macOS and Linux is free, as is the AnkiWeb account that synchronizes a collection between devices, and so is AnkiDroid for Android. The official application for iPhone and iPad, AnkiMobile, is a paid purchase, and those purchases fund the development of the project.
Better Words Online gathers eleven themed vocabulary lists on business and strategy, among them Business and Commerce, Strategy and Planning, Collaboration and Teamwork, and Responsibility and Obligation, with between thirty two and sixty five words in each. Every list comes with digital flashcards, a synonyms quiz, an antonyms quiz, a spelling bee, a same or different quiz and a printable flashcard file. The site was created by the educator Richard Skinner.
100% Free (unlimited): Every vocabulary list on the site is open to anyone, with no account and no payment: the flashcards, the synonyms and antonyms quizzes, the spelling bee, the same or different quiz, the printable flashcard files, the dictionary and the thesaurus. The workbooks and the printed flashcard sets sold in the store are separate products.
Brainscape is a flashcard platform from Bold Learning Solutions built on a spaced repetition system in which the learner rates confidence in each card and the weakest cards return soonest. Cards are made by hand, imported from a vocabulary list or question bank, or generated from a document, and they carry text formatting, images and sounds. A library of certified decks and decks made by publishers, educators and students sits alongside them.
Limits of the Free Tier Plan: Making or importing an unlimited number of flashcards is free, as is studying them with the spaced repetition system, sharing a class by link, setting study reminders and trying the artificial intelligence features. Unlimited generation of cards by artificial intelligence, the certified deck library and the organization features are reserved for the paid plans.
BusinessEnglishSite Business English Vocabulary Exercises gathers roughly two hundred vocabulary exercises sorted by professional field, among them finance, accounting, banking, sales, marketing, advertising, information technology, project management, negotiations, contracts, job interviews, business correspondence and medical English. Some are matching exercises and the rest are multiple choice, most with a note explaining the term after the answer. The site has been published since 2007 as part of LearnEnglishFeelGood.com.
100% Free (unlimited): Every exercise on the site is open to anyone, with no account, no subscription and no payment, and the answers and explanations come with them. The online course, the glossary and the printable worksheet collection are separate products sold apart from the exercises.
Clozemaster teaches vocabulary through fill in the blank sentences, a format known as a cloze: a sentence appears with one word missing and the learner either chooses among four options or types the answer. The collection holds thousands of sentences in more than fifty languages and over one hundred and seventy language pairings, including English learned from French, Spanish and many others. Sentences return on a spaced repetition schedule and are grouped by how common the words are.
Limits of the Free Tier Plan: Playing is free with an account, and the free level covers the sentence collections, the multiple choice and typing rounds, the spaced repetition review and the progress scores. A paid Pro level adds the advanced features, among them grammar analysis of a sentence and practice without limits on certain collections.
Knowt is a study platform that turns material a learner already has into flashcards and quizzes: a recorded meeting or lecture, a document, a slide deck or a video becomes a set of cards, a study guide and a practice test. Its own study modes include learn mode, spaced repetition, matching and practice tests, and a library of several million sets made by students and teachers can be searched or imported from another flashcard service.
Limits of the Free Tier Plan: Creating, sharing and studying flashcards is free, with unlimited rounds of learn mode, spaced repetition and practice test mode, and the library of sets made by other learners is open as well. Paid student and teacher plans raise the limits on the artificial intelligence tools that build cards and notes from uploaded material.
Quizlet is a study platform whose central unit is a set of terms and their definitions, studied through flashcards, a learn mode that adapts to the answers given, matching games and practice tests. A set is typed in, imported, or built by the platform from notes, a recording or a document. Sets made by other learners and by teachers can be searched and copied, and teachers can assign activities to a class.
Limits of the Free Tier Plan: A free account covers the flashcards, the study sets made by other learners, the matching game and a set number of learn mode rounds, with advertising on the pages. The paid plan adds unlimited learn mode rounds, the complete practice tests, the textbook solutions and study without advertising.
StudyStack holds a library of flashcard sets built by students and teachers since 2002, sorted into subjects that include business, languages and standardized tests. Every set a learner opens or creates is turned automatically into a dozen other activities: a crossword, a matching game, a timed guessing challenge, multiple choice questions, a straight test, a word scramble and arcade style games. A mobile application keeps a set available without a connection.
Limits of the Free Tier Plan: Browsing and studying the library is open to anyone, and a free account is needed only to build a set of your own; the games generated from each set are free as well. A paid PRO level removes the advertising, and PRO teacher accounts and school district licenses add reports on learner progress.
Vocabulary.com, a division of IXL Learning, joins a dictionary written in plain explanations to an adaptive question game that teaches the words a learner does not yet hold. Each entry opens with a short description of what the word really means and how it is used, followed by the formal definitions, example sentences drawn from current writing, and related words. Ready made word lists cover themes, books and examinations, and a learner can build a list of their own.
Limits of the Free Tier Plan: The dictionary, the word lists and the practice questions are open to anyone, and a free account keeps a record of the words mastered. The learner subscription adds the full training program and removes the advertising, and the tools for teachers and schools are sold separately.
Wordwall Business English is the business English section of the Wordwall community library, where teachers publish the activities they have built from the site's game templates. It holds thousands of sets on corporate vocabulary, telephoning, meetings, business letters, idioms and the vocabulary of course books, each one playable in the browser as a match up, a quiz, a maze chase, a spin the wheel, a set of speaking cards or an anagram. Many carry a level from A2 to B2.
Limits of the Free Tier Plan: Any activity published in the community library can be played in the browser, with no account and no payment, and switched to another game template while playing. A free account also allows three activities of your own on twelve templates; unlimited creation, printing and the further templates belong to the paid plans.
